Have you ever seen a random ad appear in your timeline and wondered why Facebook is showing it to you? it probably has something to do with your advert preferences - a selection of topic Facebook believes you're interested in based on your profile , pages you like or engage with, ads you click on and apps and websites you use.
it's super interesting to understand more about what topic Facebook believes you're interested in and within your Facebook settings, you can view and even edit these preferences. To take a peck at your preferences , click setting in the top right comer of Facebook; then select adverts, and click 'Edit' next to 'ads based on my preferences'; you'll then see the blow screen, click 'visit ad preferences' to view and edit your preferences; now . you'll be taken to the page where you can view and edit all of your ad preferences.
it's fascinating to dive into each category and check out the topics listed within your preferences . if you'd like to remove any of your preferences, and not receive ads Targetted to that topic, you can do so by hovering over and clicking the 'x' button; (h/t to Katie Notopoulos over at Buzzfeed for this tip)
2. Images posted via Instagram receive more engagement than native Facebook posts
A Buzzsumo study of over i billioin Facebook posts from 3 million brand pages found that images posted to FACEBOOK via Instagram receive more engagement than natively published images;
this is particularly interesting, as often , cross posting from one platform to another to result in less engagement (native Facebook video vs , embedding a you tube video on Facebook, for example).
however, with Instagram being owned by Facebook, there could be some benefits for Facebook by making posts from Instagram more visible in the timeline.
Have you tried posting images to Facebook via Instagram? Id love to hear if you noticed any difference in engagement in the comments below.
3. The six degrees of separation are shrinking
Six degrees of separation is the theory that everyone in the world is six or fewer steps away , by way of introduction, from any other person . However, thanks to social media, it appears the six degrees are now shrinking.
According to a Facebook study, the six degrees of separation has now become the three- and -a - half degrees of separation, as Facebook explain on their research blog; Each person in the world ( at least among the 1.59 billion people active on Facebook) is connected to every other person by an average of three and a half other people . the majority of the people on Facebook have averages between 2.9 and 4.2 degrees of separation as the below graph shows;
this highlights how social media, and Facebook, in particular, is making us more connected. You can find out more about this and find your degrees of separation over at the Facebook research blog. Below are my degrees of separation and those of a few Facebook employees:
1. head over to settings> Data USAGE.
2. Set your data limit by dragging the orange line to reflect your monthly quota.
3. set your data usage cycle based on when your ''month'' starts and ends, and you're done.
you will be alerted once you hit the limit you have set. Note that the tracked data usage of your phone may very slightly than your carrier's tracking.
4. Add multiple google accounts to use an android phone but did you know you can choose to run more than one Google account on your android device. this is convenient if you use more than one account for several of your Google services. to add multiple Google accounts:
1.go to settings> add account.
2.select GOOGLE AND SETUP YOUR New or existing google account.
3. once added, choose what you want to sync with the account.
Repeat all the steps above if you want to add more accounts.
4. un follow people you don't want to see in your news feed and don't want to completely unfriend.
if you wan want to stop seeing someone's posts in your news feed but don't have the guts to completely unfriend them, you can unfollow them to hide their activity.
From someone's profile in the Facebook mobile app, tap on ''Following '' under their profile picture and then ''unfollow'' to get rid of their posts completely. on the desktop side, click the drop down arrow to the right of a post to unfollow a person.
5. Tell Facebook won't you don't like seeing in your News feed to improve its recommendations.
your news feed isn't a chronological list of activity. it's a mix of posts Facebook determines you may be interested in based on how you interact on the social network.
if you see a post you don't like, tab the drop down arrow to the right and select ''i don't like this post'' to let Facebook know it should show you less of that kind of content.
6. Make lists to separate groups of people you're friends with, like school friends and work colleagues.
Designating groups within your list of friends can be useful to filter between what everyone is talking about in your news feed. for instance, you may want to see what everyone from your hometown is sharing or just your friends from college.
Facebook creates list of friends by default based on common affiliation, whether it be the same hometown , school, etc, on Facebook's desktop side you can see all of your friend lists from this page and add people to them. This creates individual News feed within Facebook for you to browse.
7. Give yourself a short bio.
Facebook lest you create a short bio for yourself that sits above your other profile information, such as city, work, and relationship status.
You can edit it ant any time from your profile on the desktop site and mobile app. pro tip; make your bio completely out of emojis.
8. Unsubscribe from notifications for posts you've commented on.
all probably commented on a post and regretted it later because of the onslaught of notifications that followed from other people commenting.
